Today Dean from Cardiff came to pick his first three pairs of javas up.He has had canaries since his early teens , but now fancies the challenge of the java, good luck!
My 4 pied chicks are doing well,my cream hen with a pastel has laid her fourth egg today, and my cream cock with a opal Isabel has laid her first egg today, so things are starting to happen again after the break I gave them.
SEPTEMBER 7
Today one of my pied chicks died the oldest one out of the four. Its crop was empty so i don't know if the parents stopped feeding it or there was something wrong with it.Two other chick crops wern`t as full as they should be ,i will have to keep a close eye on the other three chicks. It`s strange as they are nearly two weeks old!!
I will be going to Stafford on October 8 ,to meet some people which i have arranged to purchase some of their stock.I am after silver hens, fawn hens and white hens,as i have lots of cocks which will be ready for next season and they will need some partners.
If anyone has silver, fawn or white hens please email me by clicking on this diary page thanks.
SEPTEMBER 8
Went down to check on my pied this morning, the cock and hen were sitting on the perch,i guessed it was going to be bad news - and so it was the three other chicks were dead. What caused the birds to suddenly stop feeding them after 10 days i don`t know???
I will try them once more , but i will have a foster kit ready (syringe and plenty of time).Or i might remove the eggs as she is laying them and put clear eggs under her, once she has stopped laying i will put 2 of her own eggs (usually the second laid egg on wards as i find the first laid egg is usually clear i find)back under her to see if they feed the chicks, until they can feed themself.I will put the other eggs that she laid under other pairs, just like i done with my creams.
Tonight i went to lock my birds up and to put the night light on i noticed the bulb had gone,so i wonder if the pied were out of the nest box all night,so they were not able to feed the young ???
Also Dean from Cardiff emailed me to say that he has had this happen to him before that meaning MICE climbing up into the breeding quarters frightening the birds?? I have just ordered 6 mouse traps to be on the safe side.
SEPTEMBER 10
My cream hen and pastel cock pair eggs have started to show the first stages of life, and my cream cock with a pastel hen has laid six eggs.
My other pairs have done nothing as of now.
SEPTEMBER 15
My white cock and fawn hen have had their first egg today, out of a white x fawn they should produce red eyed whites hopefully and fawns.
Also my four mouse traps i placed Wednesday loaded with lard and one with strawberry jam worked, two mice had fallen for the trap (RIP).
SEPTEMBER 20
Things are on the move again,my cream hen with pastel cock first egg hatched today, looking at the colour of the first chick is going to be a pastel like its dad.Hopefully the other three eggs will hatch ok in the next few days.
My fawn hen with white cock has so far laid five eggs and has started to sit on them to start the incubation period,i am quite confident some of their eggs are going to be full as the cock has tread the hen a few times.
My pied which had four chicks (September 7-8) have started to lay again,in a different nest box. With three mice down i hope i should not have any trouble this time(fingers crossed).
Also today i have three young quail chick running about my flight floor.
With Stafford just around the corner i have started to build up my funds to buy some new javas that take my fancy. My wife keeps eying up my wallet so i have had to hide it until Stafford.
I hope i will meet some of the people i have talked to via email.
SEPTEMBER 24
The four eggs out of the fawn hen and normal pastel only two hatched the other were dead in shell. One of the chicks has black eyes and the other white so it look like i have 1 pastel chick and 1 cream, which i am very pleased with. They seem to be feeding well so fingers crossed all goes well.
Another mouse in the trap today.
My white cock with fawn hen some are the eggs are starting to show signs of life.
My pied have laid 4 eggs , i have removed two of them to put under another pair of birds.I want to see if it was the mice that spooked them (September 8).
SEPTEMBER 25
I finally managed to get the fawn cock and opal Isabel of their nest there were two young chicks,1 of which just looked like it had not long hatched.I will be very pleased if all 5 eggs hatch ok as they are both my favorite colours.
Looks as if 5 of the six eggs out of the white cock & fawn hen are full (:
SEPTEMBER 30
A normal pastel and a cream chick out of a cream hen and normal pastel cock
My 6 chicks are all doing great,i just put ring number 20 on the oldest chick out of the pastel/cream hen,the other chick is still a bit to small to ring.
I am going to enter two pairs of javas in the Morriston show tomorrow, a pair of my own bread silvers and a pair of my own bread Opel Pastels.
